What AI Costs Compared to a New Hire

By Luke Bachtold

A paid Claude plan runs $20 to $100 a month. Here's how that compares to a hire, and the catch that decides whether the money is well spent.

Quick math.

As of October 2026, Claude's individual plan is $20 a month, and the plans built for heavy daily use start at $100 a month. Team plans for businesses run $25 a person each month, or $20 if you pay for the year.

Now think about what a real hire costs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the average private-sector employee costs $46.89 for every hour they work once wages and benefits are added up (June 2026). For someone full-time, that's well over $7,000 a month.

Is AI cheaper than hiring someone?

On cost alone, it's not close. And it works at 2 AM. It never calls in, and it never quits.

But I want to be honest here, because that's the wrong comparison. AI doesn't replace the person who knows your customers and keeps your office running. It takes the busywork off their plate so they spend more of their day on the work only they can do.

The better question is what an hour of your best person's time is worth, and how many of those hours go to copying, retyping, summarizing, and writing the same email for the fifth time this week.

What's the catch?

Untrained, it gives you generic work. Same as any hire you never onboarded.

If you sign up, type a few one-line requests, and get average answers back, you'll decide AI is overhyped. Most people who give up on it never trained it. They hired it and left it standing in the lobby.

Training it is the whole game. Tell it about your business, your customers, and how you like things done. In Claude you can save that background in a project once, so you're not repeating yourself every time you open a new chat.

Which plan should a small business start with?

If you're just trying it out, start on the $20 plan and only move up if you keep hitting the limits. Once AI is part of your daily work, the heavier plans start to make sense.

For a team, a business plan keeps everyone under one account, and Anthropic doesn't use conversations on business plans to train its models. On the free and individual plans, a setting called Help improve Claude is on by default, so check it if you don't want your chats used for training.

Is it worth the money?

A hundred dollars a month is nothing if it gives you back hours every week. It's wasted if nobody sets it up.

The money was never the hard part. Setting it up right is. If you want to see what setting it up looks like, start with AI Is a Coworker, Not Software.
